Evaluating the Painful Knee: A Hands-on Approach to Acute Ligamentous and Meniscal Injuries

چکیده
usculoskeletal conditions are the second most common cause (after respiratory ailments) of patient visits to office-based physicians. Of these musculoskeletal conditions, knee problems are the second most common reason (after back pain) for seeing the doctor, accounting for 10.8 million office visits annually. Knee pain sends an additional 1 million patients to emergency departments every year. About 1 in every 20 patients who presents to an adult primary care clinic has knee pain. As physically active baby boomers continue to age, the incidence of acute knee injuries among this generation will undoubtedly increase. At the other end of the age spectrum, continued growth in the number of children participating in sports may also boost the future incidence of knee injuries. Despite the growing reliance on primary care physicians for evaluation of acute knee injuries, Evaluating the Painful Knee: A Hands-on Approach to Acute Ligamentous and Meniscal Injuries

Evaluating acutely injured patients for internal derangement of the knee.
Although historical findings have some value in diagnosing internal derangement of the knee, a thorough physical examination can often rule out fracture and ligamentous and meniscal injuries. The Ottawa Knee Rule can help physicians determine which patients require radiography. Positive physical examination tests and findings of acute effusion suggest internal derangement. An abnormal McMurray ...

BACKGROUND The evaluation of acute knee pain often includes radiography of the knee. OBJECTIVE To synthesize the literature to determine the role of radiologic procedures in evaluating common causes of acute knee pain: fractures, meniscal or ligamentous injuries, osteoarthritis, and pseudogout. DATA SOURCES MEDLINE search from 1966 to October 2002. STUDY SELECTION We included all publishe...
متن کاملPosterior Cruciate Ligament: Current Concepts Review
The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is the largest and strongest ligament in the human knee, and the primary posteriorstabilizer. Recent anatomy and biomechanical studies have provided an improved understanding of PCL function. PCLinjuries are typically combined with other ligamentous, meniscal and chondral injuries. Stress radiography has becomean important and validated objective measure in...

BACKGROUND To identify and characterize the concomitant ligamentous and meniscal injuries in floating knee. METHODS A total of 37 cases of floating knee were enrolled. Arthroscopic or open surgical examination of the knee, Lachman test, posterior drawer's test, and varus and valgus stress tests under anesthesia were carried out to determine the incidence of knee injury. RESULTS Through arth...
متن کاملAccuracy of MRI in comparison with clinical and arthroscopic findings in ligamentous and meniscal injuries of the knee.
Rapidly progressing medical technology sometimes obscures the importance of history and physical examination. This study was designed to assess the value of MRI and clinical examination in the diagnosis of ligamentous and meniscal knee injuries in comparison with arthroscopic findings. In the year 2003-2004, we conducted a prospective, single blind study to assess ligamentous and meniscal injur...
